Photojournalistic wedding photography involves having the photographer
treat the wedding as if the photographer is covering the wedding for a
magazine or newspaper article. Carried to the extreme, the photographer
is very much in everyone's face, just as a photographer would be at a fire
or major press interview. Nothing is planned, but the photographer tries
to capture everything that happens. Needless to say, such extreme cases
are not so common because it is disturbing to most brides and grooms.
That said, there are couples who enjoy this type of coverage, and they
should finds an extreme wedding photojournalistic photographer.
More commonly, the pure photojournalistic wedding photographer will keep
back a bit, but will still not plan any formal photographs. This type
of photography leads to lots of great candid portraits of the wedding
party and the guests. However, it also leaves out something that we find
very important: formal shots of the bride, groom, and their families and
wedding parties. We find these types of photographs are also needed for
a full wedding album.
More often than not, modern wedding photographers combine photojournalistic
with traditional and photo-illustrative styles of photography.
Recently, a professional group for photojournalistic photographers has
formed. It is called he Wedding Photojournalists Association (WPJA). If
you are looking for a wedding photographer very strong in photojournalism,
it may be a useful resource for you.
